Westfields 7 Gedling Miners Welfare 1.
WESTFIELDS raced into the next round with a resounding 7-1 victory over Gedling in their FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie at allpay.park.
Starting at a high tempo against the Nottingham outfit, Gareth Thomas opened the home account in the seventh minute with a header from Daniel Moon’s corner.
The scores were level within a minute, however, when a mistake by Bryn Watkins allowed the visitors’ Tom Aldridge to latch on to a through ball and score.
Watkins made amends with saves from two close-range efforts before Jamie Edwards restored Westfields’ advantage with a curling 20-yarder for a 2-1 lead at the interval.
The home side began to get on top after the break and Moon scored from eight yards. Paul Allam set up Jamie Cuss to open up a commanding 4-1 lead.
Terry Green denied the persevering Gedling side with a fine tackle and then Mark Davis pounced in the 67th minute after his initial effort had come back off the woodwork.
After three substitutions, the home team eased into an unassailable lead when Mark Hibbard was upended in the area and got up to fire home the resulting penalty.
Westfields were still not finished and the scoring was completed when Davis capped a fine performance by notching number seven.
Turning smartly he beat the Gedling ‘keeper with a deft chip from the 18-yard line.
So, a fine attacking display earned the hosts a home tie against Stratford Town in the next round scheduled for Saturday, August 30.
